BREAK OUT THE BROOMS: SURF COMPLETE SWEEP OF QUEBEC
July 27 Recap
Atlantic City, N.J. – Starting pitcher Brian Rodaway (pictured) shut down the Can-Am League’s top offense as the Atlantic City Surf defeated the visiting Capitales, 8-1, in a Sunday evening affair at Bernie Robbins Stadium. The victory was the seventh straight for Atlantic City, the team’s longest streak of the season. It also marks the first time this season that first-half champion Quebec has been swept. The Surf (10-3) put a run on the board in the second inning on 1B Eddie Kim’s RBI single, driving in RF Josh Burrus, before exploding for five tallies in the third. After CF Lucas Taylor walked and SS Anthony Granato singled, 2B Brad Thoma hit a three-run bomb to left, his fourth of the season. LF Joe Burke then walked, before DH Clyde Williams followed up with a two-run blast of his own, tying him with Burrus for the team lead and making it a 6-0 game. The home run parade continued in the fourth, with Granato hitting a two-run, one-out dinger, brining home 3B Gil Zayas, to increase the Surf advantage to 8-0. Quebec (7-6) countered with a run in the sixth on CF Goefrey Tomlinson’s solo shot, but it was not nearly enough, as Rodaway (7-5) stifled the Capitales through seven innings of work. Coming into the game with a league-leading .298 team batting average, Quebec managed seven hits off of the lefthander, while striking out eight times. Derek Duclos and Derek Barrows each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to ensure the victory. T.J. Stanton (3-2) allowed eight runs on nine hits in four and one-third innings to merit the loss. Granato and Zayas both went 3-for-4 to lead the Surf attack, while Thoma and Williams had two hits apiece. Granato has been swinging a hot bat as of late, having multiple hits in 6 of his last 7 games. For Quebec, Tomlinson and DH Patrick D’Aoust each had a pair of hits. The Surf look to extend the winning streak when they start a four-game series at home against Ottawa on Monday evening. The Rapidz, who finished the first half in the Can-Am League cellar, have played well recently, winning three in a row, including an 18-7 thrashing of New Jersey on Sunday afternoon. J.C. Huguet (7-2) hurls for Quebec, while Adam Hawes (3-7) takes the mound for Ottawa.
