Game Recap

OFFENSE KEEPS ROLLING AS SURF WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT
July 23 Recap

Ottawa- After 18 hits last night, the Surf offense bombarded the Rapidz for 15 more in a 13-3 win, as the Surf completed the sweep of Ottawa in a Can-Am League game Wednesday night at Rapidz Stadium.

The Surf fell behind early in the first inning, as the Rapidz got two quick runs off of JC Huguet (7-2). SS Juan Infante led off the game with a double, and scored when 1B Jabe Bergeron smacked a double of his own. CF Pete Pirman then singled, scoring Bergeron and giving the Rapidz the early 2-0 lead. It was the only lead off the night for Ottawa; as Atlantic City went on to score 13 unanswered runs.

The Surf got things going in the top half of the second, getting to starter Tanner Watson (1-4). LF Joe Burke led off the inning with a double, and scored when RF Josh Burrus singled and Rapidz 3B Jake Daubert made an error that allowed Burke to come all the way home. After 1B Eddie Kim reached on, the C William Plaza drove him in on a triple, his first of the season, which tied the ballgame up at two.

The Surf took the lead for good in the fourth. Burrus reached on an error to lead off the inning, and went to third on a Kim double. Plaza then grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Burrus from third. 3B Gil Zayas then hit a sac fly to left, scoring Kim, and giving the Surf a 4-2 lead which they would never surrender.

Atlantic City scored five runs in the seventh, and four runs in the eighth respectively. 2B Brad Thoma had the big knock in the seventh, with a single that drove in two runs, and DH Clyde Williams, C Michael Santoro, Zayas, and CF Lucas Taylor all had RBI’s in the eighth.

JC Huguet tied Adam Cox for the team lead in wins with his seventh. The righty went six strong, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out four and not allowing a walk. Derek Barrows worked three innings of relief, to shut the door on the Rapidz. Offensively, the 33 hits combined between last night and tonight is the largest two game total for the Surf all season. Five players had multi-hit games, and seven different players knocked in a run. Atlantic City is now 9-1 against Ottawa this season.

The Surf are off tomorrow, but resume action Friday night, as they return home to Bernie Robbins Stadium for a seven game homestand against Quebec and Ottawa. The first half winners have given the Surf the most problems this season, as Atlantic City is only 4-8 against their neighbors to the North this year. Righty Adam Cox will start for the Surf. Cox was named the Can-Am League pitcher of the week, after going 2-0 last week, and yielding just one earned run. He also continues to lead the league in strikeouts, with 92 punch-outs. Game time is 7:05 PM.
