CAPITALES OFFENSE TOO MUCH FOR SURF
(Quebec City) – Surf starter JC Huguet didn’t make it through five
innings and surrendered eight earned runs, as Atlantic City dropped their
third in a row to the Capitales 13-3 in front of 3,428 fans in game three of a
four game series.
Huguet (6-2) allowed a season high twelve hits, as Quebec used consecutive
four run innings in the fourth and fifth inning to chase Huguet out of the
game.
As they did in last night’s loss, the Surf jumped out ahead early against
Capitales starter TJ Stanton (3-1), scoring the first three runs of the
ballgame. In the top of the first inning, DH Clyde Williams singled,
and scored on a RF Josh Burrus (above) home run, his team leading
sixth of the season, and third in the month of July. Atlantic City added
another run in the second inning courtesy of the long ball. 3B Gil
Zayas homered to right, his third of the season. It was the final run the
Surf would score in the ballgame.
Huguet was sharp in his first three innings of work, but ran into trouble in the
fourth. The Capitales plated four runs, the big blow a two RBI single off the
bat of 3B Pat Deschenes. It was a big night for the 3B, who ended
with a total of four RBI’s and now has 39 on the season.
Quebec would put the game out of reach in the fifth inning, scoring four
more runs again on five hits. Huguet only recorded one out in the inning
before being replaced by reliever Aaron Easton. The tall righty also
had a tough day at the office against the Capitales, surrendering five runs in
his two and two thirds innings of work.
For Quebec, every batter in the starting lineup recorded a base hit. Stanton
settled down nicely after a rough first couple of innings, and went seven
strong, allowing the three runs on seven hits, while striking out seven and not
walking a batter.
For the Surf, aside from the home runs off the bats of Zayas and Burrus,
Williams and 1B Joe Burke each went 2-for-4. Atlantic City is now 3
and 8 against Quebec this season. The Surf will try to salvage this four game
series tomorrow afternoon, with a 1:05 PM start. Lefty Adam Cox
(6-2) takes the ball for manager Cecil Fielder. The 6’4” southpaw has been
dominant lately, as he has just allowed five earned runs his last five starts. He
also leads the Can-Am League with 84 strikeouts, and an ERA in the top five,
at 2.33. He is opposed by Chris Begg, who makes his first start of
the season for Quebec.
