SURF KEEP ROLLING, NOTCH FIFTH CONSECUTIVE VICTORY
July 15 Recap
Atlantic City, N.J. – RF Josh Burrus (pictured) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored as the Atlantic City Surf defeated the New Jersey Jackals, 5-4, in a Can-Am League affair on Tuesday evening at Bernie Robbins Stadium. It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Surf, equaling the team’s longest streak this season. Atlantic City (2-0) drew first blood in the second inning. After loading the bases with no out via a bunt single by Burrus, a walk to 1B Eddie Kim , and a single by C William Plaza, 3B Gil Zayas grounded into a double play, bringing home Burrus. New Jersey (0-2) took the lead in the fifth on CF Zach Smithlin’s two-run double, and added another in the sixth on C Craig Maddox’s RBI groundout, making it a 3-1 game. The Surf then tied the game with two runs in their half of the sixth. After Burrus drove in DH Clyde Williams with a no-out triple, Kim walked; Plaza then reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Burrus. In the seventh, LF Joe Burke hit an RBI triple, driving in SS Anthony Granato, to give the Surf a short-lived 4-3 lead. The Jackals responded with a run in the eighth on RF Marcos Rodriguez ’s one-out RBI single up the middle, but Atlantic City scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom half of the frame, when Plaza grounded into a double play, scoring Burrus. Kyle George (4-1) registered the victory for the Surf in relief; the righthander threw one inning and gave up the game-tying run in the top of the eighth, but was the pitcher of record when Atlantic City scored the go-ahead run in the bottom half of the frame. Walker Whitley recorded his sixth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning. J.C. Huguet started for the Surf and threw six solid innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, striking out three. For New Jersey, Hunter Davis (2-4) was tagged with the loss, throwing two innings and allowing single runs in both the seventh and eighth. Starter Tom Atlee received a no-decision, as the Surf scored three runs on six hits off of the righty. The game marked the first time this season that the Surf hit two triples in a game, with Burrus and Burke hitting three-baggers. Atlantic City previously won five games in a row from May 24-28, over Quebec and Ottawa. The Surf go for the series sweep of the Jackals Wednesday morning, with Adam Cox (5-2) on the hill for Atlantic City in an 11:05 a.m. start.
