SURF CAN'T STOP SKYHAWKS' OFFENSE
June 27 Recap
(Augusta, NJ) - The Skyhawks pounded out 19 hits en route to a 12-6 win over the Surf, in a Can-Am League game Thursday night at Skylands Park. LF Billy Kovatch (above) had a career game, going 4-5, but it was far from being enough as Sussex dominated Surf pitching. The Surf did strike first in the first inning off of Sussex starter Matt Salvato (3-1). SS Anthony Granato walked. Kovatch then doubled, allowing Granato to move to third. DH Clyde WIlliams then hit a sac fly to left, allowing Granato to score. Sussex responded with two of their own in the first inning. Surf starter JC Huguet (4-1), coming off a complete game shutout against Nashua Monday, struggled early. CF Ron Perodin singled to lead off the game, and stole second. SS Kevin Rios singled, allowing Perodin to advance. RF Jorge Moreno hit a sacrifice fly that scored Perodin from third. Rios would later score on a fielder's choice off the bat off LF Alex Frazier. The Surf tied it at two in the second. C William Plaza walked, and 3B Gill Zayas reached on an error. Plaza later scored off an RBI single from 2B Brad Thoma. It would be the last time the game was tied. Sussex scored two more again in the third, but really busted the game open in the fifth and sixth season, when they batted around both times and plated four runs in each inning. Jim Wladyka came on in relief for Huguet, who lasted just four and a third and allowed eight earned. Wladyka was responsible for the four run sixth. Ever player for Sussed recorded a base hit, led by C Yohanny Valera's 4-5 night. Six players also had multi-hit games. Kovatch was the lone bright spot for the Surf, with a career high four hits and three RBI's. Tomorrow these teams play the middle game of this series at 5:05 PM. Adam Cox (3-2)starts for Atlantic City, coming off his brilliant fourteen strikeout game Tuesday. Kyle Ruwe, who leads the Can-Am League with six wins, starts for Sussex. **********
