SIXTEEN-HIT ATTACK STEERS SURF TO VICTORY OVER SKYHAWKS

Atlantic City, N.J. – Atlantic City SS Anthony Granato and 2B Brad Thoma both went 3-for-5 as the Surf cruised to an 11-3 Can-Am League victory over the Sussex Skyhawks on Wednesday afternoon at Bernie Robbins Stadium.

After the Surf tallied a run in the first on DH Clyde Williams’ sacrifice fly, Sussex responded with three runs in the second inning on 1B Michael Weston’s RBI double and CF Ron Perodin’s two-run single.

It was all Atlantic City the rest of the way, though, as the Surf put a run on the board in the second on Granato’s RBI single, and tacked on two more in the third to make it a 4-3 game.

The score would stay that way until the seventh, when Atlantic City (11-8) exploded for six runs on Thoma’s RBI single, Granato’s three-run double, and an inside-the-park home run by C Joe Burke, bringing home Granato. The Surf added a final run in the eighth on Burke’s bases-loaded walk.

1B Eddie Kim, 3B Arturo Ledesma and CF Lucas Taylor had two hits apiece for the Surf. Sussex LF Alex Frazier was the only Skyhawk with more than one hit, going 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base.

Making a spot start in place of Ben Thurmond, who was waived on Tuesday, Atlantic City’s Rory Shortell lasted four and one-third innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Aaron Easton (pictured) (1-0) was dominant in relief and earned the victory, striking out five and retiring 11 of the 12 batters he faced. Gary Galvez (2-3) took the loss for Sussex (9-10) after giving up seven earned runs in six and two-thirds innings of work.

The two teams face off in the rubber match of the series on Thursday night, with Atlantic City’s Jim Wladyka (1-1) opposing Sussex’s Kyle Ruwe (3-1).
